The Fashion of Art Deco: Lifestyle in the Jazz Age
Glamorous opulence, progressive modernity, and subtle androgyny–all are aspects that characterized fashion of the Art Deco period of 1920-1939. These stylistic tendencies stemmed from important societal shifts: the first women’s liberation movement, technological advances, and a booming economy that allowed women to take part in the modern urban culture. In a time of widespread experimentation with artistic expression, Art Deco’s influences are rooted across the world in the cultures of Egypt, France, Germany, and Russia.
This exhibition focuses on Art Deco fashion and the urban lifestyle, featuring 11 stunning dresses and accompanying accoutrements such as purses, compacts, perfume bottles, and more from the collection of Don Orban.
This exhibition is supported by the Edward D. and Ione Auer Foundation.
