The Fort Wayne Museum of Art Chalk Walk has been a trademark event held on Main Street in downtown Fort Wayne since 2000. The event is based on an Italian tradition of street painting that dates to the 16th century, known as i madonnari (street painters). Using pastels, artists of varying levels of experience may choose to reproduce existing artworks or create their own in their designated square. The event typically draws 40,000 people to see the spectacle unfold.
Chalk Walk 2021 will be an in-person event this year, but we’ll still practice social distancing among the participants! For that reason, there will only be half as many squares this year. Other health measures will be taken, which we will announce as we near the event. Registration will open April 12 at 12pm, and we’ll announce prize categories the week of April 5.
Not ready to participate in person but still want to be a part of this amazing event? We’ll once again offer Chalk Walk at Home, where you can create your chalk art at home and submit it to an online public gallery.
As it is every year, our goal is to draw the city’s most creative citizens together to contribute to the largest community art project in the region, attracting families, friends, and supporters of a vibrant cultural life in Fort Wayne.
Registration is open for digital participation!
As we are practicing social distancing among the participants, there will be fewer squares available this year and we expect them to sell out quickly. For that reason, we are increasing prices this year. T-shirts are not included in the swag this year but will be available for purchase for $10.
Note: Each family/group may purchase only one square this year and we will not honor any placement requests. Please limit your group to no more than 5 people.
Chalk Walk at Home Fees
Virtual participation with signature swag bag and 24 count pastels – $10
Virtual participation with no swag bag – FREE
Participation in the virtual event is free (unless you want the swag bag), but you must create an online account with our image uploading system in order to participate. Once your registration is complete, you may upload your image to be part of the online public gallery! We will make the image uploading system available to participants as we get closer to the event.
To be included in the online public gallery, you must use chalk pastels or sidewalk chalk on a cement or asphalt surface outside. We will not accept paintings or other media on other surfaces.
Both in person participants and virtual participants will be eligible for prizes! $100 cash prizes are awarded to winners in each category (except for the “Under 12” category, which is a $50 prize). Winners are chosen by a panel of judges from FWMoA and the community, except for the People’s Choice Award, which is chosen by the public. One square may be selected as the 2022 T-Shirt art, but this will not be a competitive category this year.
