From Gesture to Geometry: American Abstract Artists

June 13, 2026 - September 06, 2026

By the 1930s, a young generation of American abstract artists emerged in New York City, aware of past avant-garde trends in Europe. Founded in 1936, American Abstract Artists was more of a community than a movement. The group was a forum to exchange ideas and provide exhibiting and publishing opportunities. They chose a name that was open ended, welcoming a diverse membership with no unified medium or style. This exhibition reflects the range of current and past members’ works from the permanent collection, including Will Barnet, Byron Browne, Sam Gilliam, and Dorothea Rockburne, among others.

This exhibition is supported by the Edward D. and Ione Auer Foundation.
