Especially Terrific: New Paintings by Pat Perry

August 10, 2024 - October 13, 2024

Pat Perry’s most recent body of work surveys scenes of American suburban andmidwestern life from which beauty might arise. Beginning in the 2010s, the artist’s ongoing series of sketchbooks and photos documenting his travels within the United States from freight trains became some of his best-known works, showing scenes of “America from backstage.”

Although he has created illustrations for the New York Times and VICE magazine, he prefers creating work that address social justice issues. A few of his collaborators include Beehive Design Collective, AptArts, No More Deaths, and the UN High Commissioner For Refugees.

Perry works and lives in downtown Detroit’s east side, where he is attempting to regrow a forest on the twelve vacant lots that surround his house.

This exhibition is curated by Josef Zimmerman, Curator of Contemporary Art and is supported by the Edward D. and Ione Auer Foundation.
