Describiendo la Belleza

September 26, 2015 - December 06, 2015

The works of art in Describiendo la Belleza (Spanish for “Describing Beauty”) were selected for their unique representations of beauty.  Each print captures both the joyous and heartbreaking ways of capturing beauty.  Made up of many artists from the Serie Project, this collection represents how broad the institution’s reach has become.  Based in Austin, TX, the Serie Project strives to reach and represent Latino printmakers.

All the prints on display are portraits or figurative works of art, and almost all are serigraphs, also known as silk-screens.  This printmaking technique is the exclusive method used by the artists of Serie project.

While the works of art are all figurative (meaning recognizable forms such as people), there are various themes captured in these pieces.  Mesoamerican culture and Roman Catholicism, the dominant religion in Mexico, are two examples.  We can see aspects of the history and culture influencing how the artists have interpreted beauty.  Additionally, some prints address the representation and interpretation of Latino culture present today. Through these works of art we can see how beauty varies and can be discovered in any situation life brings.
