20th Century Japanese Prints: Shin Hanga And Sosaku Hanga in the Print and Drawing Study Center
July 08, 2025 -
August 29, 2025
For many books and articles, the study of Japanese woodblock prints ends in the 19th century. This exhibition looks beyond the classic era into the 20th century, in which prints diverged in two directions. Shin Hanga followed the traditional format, themes, and division of labor of the 18th and 19th centuries. Sosaku-hanga showed the influence of Western art, embracing abstraction and the artist as printmaker.
Included in this exhibition are prints by Yōshū Chikanobu, Haku Maki, Hiroshi Yoshida, and Toshi Yoshida, among others.
This exhibition is supported by the Edward D. and Ione Auer Foundation.
